At New Year 2019 into 2020 I was in rural Wales, walking the South Wales Coast Path. Walking at Saundersfoot near Tenby, when I noticed how the storms had thrown up a lot of plastic debris. I gathered a few bags of material, which became part of an installation I called After 3.23. The title echoes Drew Dellinger’s poem Hieroglyphic Stairway, which starts, “It’s 3.23 in the morning, and I’m awake”. Drew’s poem has been an inspiration to me for years – I often used it in my workshops, it’s one of the iconic poems of the environmental movement, and it became widely used by XR in their protests. My multimedia piece combined found objects, art and a poem sequence to answer Drew’s poem. The piece became a book and a film made by Richard Nichols and voiced by Kate Firth.
