Seashore

I live in the hills but I come from the coast. I was born in Paignton and spent my early life on the beaches of Torbay and South Devon.

More recently I have become a long-distance walker. I walked the entire 1,000km of the South West coast path in 2016. I am part way through walking the Wales Coast Path.

My local beach is at Teignmouth. I’m very fortunate that all the beaches of the southwest are within reach of a day trip from home. I walk on a beach every week, sometimes every day.

I get endless inspiration from the sea and the seashore. It’s a great source of found-object art for me.

These seaweed images are from Christmas-New Year 2020/21 when I was renting a place in Cornwall (just before a sudden lockdown caused an early dash home). I let the seaweed dry out on my sketchbook, adding in some pebbles and sand from the beach (Porthtowan and Perran Sands mostly).

After I’d taken the photographs, next door’s chickens enjoyed the seaweed. You know you’ve made land-art when chickens eat your sculpture.
